Cleaning your CamelBak Reservoir

Ride over, bike cleaned, now where is that cup of tea? We know the feeling, but if you've been riding with a CamelBak, you'll need to hold off on the post-ride beverage for a moment & give your hydration bladder a rinse and/or clean (contents depending) to keep it in tip-top shape ready for the next outing.

The very best way to care for your CamelBak reservoir is to clean and dry it after every ride, especially if you fill the reservoir with anything other than water. Not cleaning your CamelBak reservoir is a daring move, and one that will be rewarded with the appearance of dark spots of mould - yuk. Ok, here goes, this is how you clean your reservoir:

  • Use hot water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda or bleach and mix this solution inside your reservoir, then hold it up above your head while you pinch the bite valve, allowing the bleached water to run through the tube. You can also use CamelBak Cleaning Tabs sold as part of the Camelbak cleaning kit
  • Let this heady cocktail sit for about 30 minutes, then wash the reservoir with hot water and mild soap
  • Be sure to completely rinse away any bleach or cleaning solution before using again. In fact, you can also use CamelBak brushes from the cleaning kit to scrub your reservoir and tube, although it's not always necessary
  • Once the reservoir is clean, be sure to air dry it so no moisture is trapped inside, which can cause mould to grow. Ideally, leave it on the sideboard next to your kitchen basib to dry

The steps above will make your pack safe to use once again, even if you have left the reservoir way too long and mould has grown, but we're afraid to say that mould spots will remain as the pack is now stained. Let those spots be a reminder to always clean your Camelback Reservoir post-ride!

About the Rider: Peter
Co-founder of Always Riding, Pete enjoys road, trail and a good city commute. Most of all though, he loves chatting to other riders, the mid-ride stop after a leg-breaking ascent, and a cup of tea at the end of the ride. There is no truth in the rumour that he likes to wear women's clothes and hang around in bars. No truth at all.
